Picture Quality and Compatibility
Summary
So,
which is right for you. Well if you don't know after reading
this far, I may not be able to help. But I have come up with some basic types of users who
will be using these receivers and which receiver is probably the best for
their needs. Here are my specific recommendations.
Cable
Users - Grab a TiVo or ReplayTV. DishPlayer will just
not work for you. They both work exceptionally well for cable
users because of their ability to record cable TV using built in
tuners. Personally, I have both a TiVo and ReplayTV set up
to run TV throughout my house.
Dish Network
Users who get locals - If you are a current dish network user or are
thinking of getting it, check to see if you can get local channels over
the satellite. If you can, the DishPlayer is a satellite receiver
and PTV in one, so you will save some money and get many PTV features in
one box.
Satellite Users Who can't get Locals on their satellite. - You
will need to stick with ReplayTV or TiVo to be able to record your OTA
channels.
High End Theater - If you don't mind a complex remote control (or
are using a universal remote as I am) and need a unit that will
integrate into almost any system, choose the ReplayTV.
Obviously,
the TiVo had a disadvantage of being the oldest software in the
round-up. I will be sure to keep you updated when the new software
comes out, so stay tuned for an update.
Have something to add? Don't quite agree? Send you feedback
to me at info@jriver.com and
I would be glad to add it here.
