ReplayTV Tips

How to watch and record PPV through ReplayTV NEW courtesy James Barr

While ReplayTV does not include PPV channel data in its guide, you can watch and record PPV through ReplayTV! Here's how:

Press ReplayTV's "Input" button on the remote and cycle through all the ReplayTV's inputs until you reach the "DirecTV" direct input (theoretically, this should also work as well for DISH and Digital Cable PPV). Use the DirecTV remote to view the channel guide (there will be a slight delay), get "Info" on the programs, and finally purchase the program. You can now watch the PPV with all the usual "benefits" of ReplayTV (pause, REW, FF, etc.) If you want to record the PPV, while tuned to the PPV channel through the direct input, press "Record" on the ReplayTV remote. This initiates an "immediate" record right from the input where you can specify the recording quality and the duration of the recording (in 1/2 hour increments). Just be aware of any conflicts that may occur while you are recording.

You'll find that if you do an Instant Replay from Fast-Forward, the amount of time skipped back is proportional to the playback speed. Basically, it's a "variable instant replay". The timing is not totally tuned yet (we're working on improving it), but with a little practice you can do pretty well.  This way, you have a choice: press PLAY to come out without any sort of attempted correction, or use the Instant Replay for when you're trying to find specific material.

In the Channel Guide, selecting a show that is on now tunes to the channel  instead of bringing up a pop-up menu. You can access the pop-up menu of a show that is currently airing by pressing the ENTER button on the remote.  This gets you access to recording options and the "Find All episodes"  command.

Delete the show you're watching.

Anytime you're watching a recorded show on ReplayTV and you want to delete
it, just press the STOP button, followed by SELECT. ReplayTV will ask you to
confirm your request for deleting it. This is perfect for deleting a show
when you're done watching it, or if it's a show you've already seen.

Page Sideways and Up/Down
You can Page sideways or in the ReplayGuide by using the fast forward/rewind buttons.  You can Page Up and Down by using the channel up/down buttons.

 Time Jump
Want to quickly jump to a specific part of a recording.  Now you can.  In Version 2.0, first hit the display button, simply type the number of minutes into a program you want to jump to and hit the jump button.  Instantly you are taken to that spot.  For example to Jump to the 10th minute of a program, type 10-Jump.   Pretty Cool.

 Missed your Favorite Show

You can scroll back in time in the Channel Guide. Want to know what was on earlier today? Now you can. If you see something you would have liked to have recorded, select the show and choose "Find all episodes" from the pop-up menu -- maybe it's on again later!

 Better Themes
courtesy Mike Kobb at ReplayTV
In the Channel Guide, if you select a show and choose "Find all episodes" from the pop-up menu, you'll see some search results and the option to create the theme channel for that show. If you create a channel this way, it will EXACTLY match the show title for you, rather than our usual sub-string match. So, if you want a "Friends" theme channel that doesn't also record "Barney & Friends", use Find All Episodes!

If you want a show-based Replay Channel to stop recording for awhile, but you don't want to delete it, select the channel in the Replay Guide, choose "Change Record Options" from the pop-up menu, and set the "Record all episodes" field to "no". The channel will stop recording (if it has never recorded anything, it will record a single show, then stop). When you want it to begin recording again, set "Record all episodes" back to "yes".
